The Alabama Basketball Institute builds players over years and not teams for the summer.
Our program begins with young athletes and develops them step by step through youth, middle school and high school basketball, ensuring every player has a pathway to improve, compete, and grow.
Your player is entering a developmental program committed to their growth as an athlete, a student, and a young adult.
ABI serves Baldwin and Mobile Counties.

I created ABI to build confidence and character through basketball. While many blame declining participation on “youth burnout,” I believe the real issue is unprepared transitions.
The biggest drop happens between sixth and seventh grade, when basketball moves from open leagues to school teams and only 10 to 15 players make the roster. I believe making the seventh-grade team is critical to a young athlete’s confidence. At the same time kids are adjusting to middle school and often losing social status, failing to make the team can deeply affect how they see themselves. This pattern often repeats again when athletes move from middle school to junior high or high school.
When players have spent years in recreational, city, or church leagues and attending camps, only to be cut, the emotional impact can be lasting. From the outside it looks like quitting but often it’s disappointment and disillusionment.
That’s why ABI starts with 3rd and 4th graders, giving athletes four years to develop before seventh-grade tryouts. We focus on fundamentals, accountability, and confidence so players don’t just make teams; they maintain belief in themselves through every transition.
Kids don’t fall out of love with basketball. They fall out when the door closes too soon. ABI exists to ensure they have a key to reopen the door.

The Alabama Basketball Institute (ABI) is unique because it combines elite basketball development with leadership, mentorship, and confidence training built on real-world experience at the highest levels of coaching and professional leadership.
Founded by Coach Paul Houlsen, whose background includes coaching national championship professional teams internationally and serving as a National Director of Training for the United Nations.
ABI approaches youth development differently than typical training programs. Instead of focusing only on short-term wins or individual drills, ABI follows a long-term athlete development model that begins in elementary school and prepares players for middle school, high school, and life beyond sports.
